In 1963, Martin Luther King made his famous, "I Have a Dream" speech in which he asks for equality for people of all races. This began the civil rights movement which included non-violent protests throughout the country. The Civil Rights movement had a significant impact on Jazz musicians. Musicians wanted to break away from their current white owned record companies and gain control over their own music.
