At age 17, Miles played his first paid "gig" in St. Louis, Missouri. It was there that he heard the musical style of bebop, played by Jazz legend Charlie Parker. Miles wanted to play this unpredictable, complex type of music. So he, like Louis Armstrong, moved to New York City. Miles briefly attended the Julliard School of Music, but dropped out after one semester. He eventually developed his own style of Jazz and played with his nine-piece band, the Miles Davis Nonet.
